Introduction:
A mysterious woman we now call Mary Magdalene is mentioned twelve times in the stories of the canonical gospels, more than any other woman who traveled in the company of Jesus and His followers. We are left to wonder about their relationships, the secrets shared, and the bonds that were created as they lived each day in an oppressive regime. The end of their brief time together unravels in the fourth gospel of John 20:11-18. These holy writings invite us to imagine the depth of Mary’s grief when she enters the tomb to find two angels who ask why she is crying.
Close by, a gardener called out her name. When Mary recognized his voice, she turned and cried out in Aramaic ‘Rabboni’ [teacher]. In that moment we can imagine the joy that would wash away her pain. Through eyes of faith and love their journey would continue for she was called to be His personal witness entrusted to announce the news of His resurrection and hope of new life. Bound by fear and secretly hiding from authorities, the disciples slowly turn to her for strength. Mary has become the tower, as in her village namesake Magdala, radiating courage to carry on so that His teachings of hope and love could be shared with the world.
Centuries passed after St. Thomas Aquinas honoured her ministry when he declared Mary as “the Apostle to the Apostles.” This was long before Pope Francis decreed July 22nd as an official feast day for celebration in 2016. Mary Magdalene will forever be a messenger of divine mystery inspiring disciples to become like-minded seekers who are open to receive gifts of faith, hope, and love from the Living and Risen Christ. Her legacy creates a spark in our imagination to bravely walk into a world of possibilities.
