Reading: “to the unholy god”
(Royce Fitts)
you are here, in our midst, closer than our breath. if you are the emanuel, the with-us god, then you are of us.
there is no chasm between the us and the you … the Holy God is the false god, the god who separates from the creation, the god who dares not touch the earth, who dares not become grimy, gritty, gracious with wisdom and love found only through laughter and pain.
the Holy God does not know me, can never understand, or feel my anguish or know the smile of a baby or the stench of a manger. to you, the unholy god, i pray … you seek me, run with me, play in the adventure of being. where is the burning bush? where are the clouds of transformation?
Where is the fear of the Holy? When i make you Holy, i, ironically, can dismiss you, make you not matter; i make distance between you and me. then, i move into pleasing, placating you out of fear, denying my authentic self, covering my nakedness with a robe of piety and righteousness. and i cannot, don’t have to be … real.

Closing Prayer:
“Sacred All That Is” (Patrice K. Curtis)
Sacred All That Is, I am the swirl of winds, the calls of birds. I am atoms and quarks, carbon and hydrogen. My soul is deep as black holes, bright as quasars. I am the Red Sea and the Sea of Galilee, the heat of sun, the pull of moon. Sacred all that is: see me—I am you. Hear me—I am you. Feel me—for I am you in love with itself.
