Mary & Joseph’s Journey in Song

Luke 1: 15, 18 The Invitation

Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have not known a man intimately?” The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit, She will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you— therefore the offspring to be born will be Holy.

Luke 1: 43-46 The Visitation – Magnificat

In a loud voice Elizabeth exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! But why am I so favored, that the mother of the Messiah should come to me? The moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who believed that what our God said to her would be accomplished!”

Matthew 1: 20-21a Joseph’s Story

Joseph, her husband, an upright person unwilling to disgrace her, decided to divorce her quietly.

This was Joseph’s intention when suddenly the angel of God appeared in a dream and said, “Joseph, heir to the House of David, don’t be afraid to wed Mary; it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived this child. She is to have a son, and you are to name him Jesus…

Luke 2: 4-7 Mary and Joseph – The Journey

And so Joseph went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to “the city of David”—Bethlehem, in Judea, because Joseph was of the house and lineage of David;  he went to register with Mary, his espoused wife, who was pregnant. 6 While they were there, the time came for her delivery. 7 She gave birth to her firstborn, a son; she put him in a simple cloth wrapped like a receiving blanket, and laid him in a feeding trough for cattle, because there was no room for them at the inn.

A Psalm For Giving Birth By Miriam Therese Winter

Let me give birth to truth, Shadddai,

and let it grow beyond me

and be fruitful

and multiply.

Let me give birth to hope, Shaddai,

though fragile as a stalk of winter wheat

in the summer storm.

Let me give birth to dreams, Shaddai,

cartwheeling, heart-reeling flights

of free-falling fantasy,

no holds barred.

Let me give birth to a theme of peace

in an irresistible song.

Let me give birth to justice

and let it redress all conceivable wrong.

Let me give birth to freedom for all,

wherever their roots are planted.

Let me give birth to just one wish

with Your promise that it will be granted.

Let me give birth to love, Shaddai,

in the most unexpected places.

Give birth to me and see that I

stay faithful to Your graces. Amen
