Be A Weed
Opening Prayer: God of all journeys, provider for all our needs, we come to you as a pilgrim people. Inspired by Ruth and Naomi, we walk toward a future we cannot see clearly, and which we enter as deep mystery. We pray for the guidance of your Spirit, for the grace that opens us to the truth and the challenges that await us. With faith in your Word and hope in your promises, may we dwell in gratitude for all that has been and all yet to come. Impelled by love, we give ourselves to the journey. Amen. (Carol Davis)
Reading: Be a Weed by Margaret Renkl
Sometimes when I haven’t slept or the news of the world, already bad, suddenly becomes much worse, the weight of belonging here is a heaviness I can’t shake. But then I think of the glister of a particular morning in springtime. I think of standing in the sunshine and watering the butterfly garden, which is mostly cultivated weeds punctuated by the uncultivated kind that come back despite my pinching and tugging. I think of the caterpillar on the milkweed plants, unperturbed by the overspray, and the resident red-tailed hawk gliding overhead, chased by a mockingbird and three angry crows and the bluebird standing on the top of the nest box protecting his mate, who is inside laying an egg. I think of that morning – not even a morning, not even an hour – and I say to myself, Be an egg. Be a mockingbird, Be a weed.
Silent Reflection
Affirmations and Intentions: By Nan Merrill
Breathe on me, O Breath of Inspiration, in the silence of my tranquil heart, infill me with your wisdom.
O, that I might radiate the compassion and peace, the truth and beauty of the Beloved!
Direct my steps, O Holy One, that I may humbly walk with You.
The witness of your Life is my model; therefore my soul yearns for You.
The unfolding of your Way gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.
My mouth pours forth praise continually, for I am ever grateful for your Promises.
You come to me and are gracious to me, as You are to all who open their heart’s door.
Guide my steps according to your Wisdom, and show me how to lovingly co-create with You.
Let me not be lured by the world’s values, that I may walk the path of wholeness.
May your face shine upon your friend, as You teach me of Love.
I weep over our wounded world, our earth ravaged by greedy, insensitive hands.
O friends, you who are fearful of Love, you, who live in loneliness, Break open the locks of your heart’s door, breathe deeply of sunlight’s freedom and warmth.
Wander no longer in the storms of ignorance and fear; for the bonds of darkness will disappear as you enter the new dawn of Light!
Hold tightly to the hand of faith for strength through the deep valleys; Learn to trust in the One, who is ever your companion and guide.
Silence to add your own intentions.
Closing Prayer: Holy Presence, we thank you for your gift of life that you have given us, filled with love, grace, joy and suffering. May we always feel the presence of your love and support however it may manifest in our lives. Knowing you are never farther than our next breath, may we breathe in and out with each other expanding our capacity to love and care for our brothers and sisters without hesitation. Through all the angels and saints, and Mary, Joseph and Jesus may we come alive.
